UHR-KRAFT SWEEPS! WINS WORLD BALANCE CUP! http://gabl.ph/2009/03/26/uhr-kraft-sweeps-wins-world-balance-cup/ http://gabl.ph/2009/03/26/uhr-kraft-sweeps-wins-world-balance-cup/#comments Fri, 27 Mar 2009 01:54:07 +0000 gracesports http://gabl.ph/?p=489 Capturing the championship is a tough task, and doing it via sweep stamps some class into it. That’s what the UHR-KRAFT team accomplished this season.

Uhr-Kraft edged out Kopinando 65-64 in their thrilling knockout championship game held last March 13, 2009. Uhr-Kraft reached the finals by sweeping all of its 10 games during the elimination and quarterfinal assignments while Kopinando went through the step ladder format disposing Snowbird to reach the finals.

Uhr-kraft start off hot leading by ten points after the first quarter with Mythical Selection first team member Avelino Lim joined hands with Season and Finals MVP Jerry Ong scoring a combined 14pts out of their team’s 19 first quarter points. Kopinando fought valiantly with Caper Ngo and Jeff Kwa scoring 10 of their 13 team points in the second quarter.

Emmanuel Chua made his presence felt inside the paint scoring clutch baskets with young hotshot JV Ong scoring a 3-pt play driving towards the basket to maintain a 5pt lead after the 3rd quarter. Kenneth Kwa making 3 out of 5 3-pointers kept the game close with the help of Christopher Tiu’s play making. The usually reliable Angelo Lim struggled all game making only 4 out of 12FG attempt.

With time down to 1:02 and Uhr-kraft up 64-62, Jerry Ong missed his 2-FT attempts but JV ong snatched the offensive rebound to the cheers of Uhr-kraft supporters. But a steal by Ronald Limsin and a basket by Christopher Tiu tied the ballgame at 64-all 44secs left.

Coach Philip Lim calls time out and set up a game winning play. But again, Uhr-kraft turned the ball over with Jeff Kwa and Christopher Tiu leading a fastbreak attack which resulted to a foul and two freethrows for Jeff Kwa 12secs left in the game. Jeff Kwa missed his two freethrows that lead to an Uhr-kraft fastbreak attack with Jerry Ong driving strong towards the basket but fouled by Johnson Ching 3.49secs. Jerry Ong made his first free throw giving Uhr-kraft a 1-pt lead, he missed his second shot and Kopinando did not have enough time to make a basket as time expired. Kopinando’s bull strong Ronald Limsin scored only 7pts but pulled down 11rebounds while Uhr-kraft center Edwin Yap had a double-double performance with 11pts and 13rebs.

In the Youth Division Championship game held last December, Cityland Batch 2007 with the help of Finals Co-MVP Stanley Co and Patrick Ang won over defending champions GCC Varsity Team. The Cityland Batch 2007 with two-time youth division champion coach Nino Sia used a relentless trapping defense with Geoffrey Chua, Angelo So, Jasper Gotia and Dino Lee working hard on defense and Tam Go hitting timely baskets. The GCC Varsity team was led by Christian So and L.A. Chua but had a hard time breaking the defense of Cityland Batch 2007 with Jason Tan and Kerwin Tiu absent during the championship game.

Snowbird Dethrones Champs http://gabl.ph/2009/03/06/snowbird-dethrones-champs/ http://gabl.ph/2009/03/06/snowbird-dethrones-champs/#comments Fri, 06 Mar 2009 17:09:28 +0000 gracesports http://gabl.ph/?p=440 Snowbird Sando Bags beat defending champion Wishcraft 81-75 in Friday night’s Grace Alumni Basketball League (GABL) knock out match at Pace Academy in Quezon City.

Snowbird, crippled by the absence of their second leading scorer Chino Guasa, was handicapped early in the game when leading scorer Bryan Bernabe brought the wrong jersey to the game.

Playing Coach Jason Ang, masterfully shuffled his available men to stay in the game while waiting for Bernabe’s jersey to be brought to the game in the last few minutes of the 2nd quarter.

The Sando Bag makers, who have made a habit of coming from behind to eventually win the game, trailed 27-34 at the half and 54-56 at the end of 3rd quarter.

Trailing almost the whole game, Coach Ang’s troops hung around and kept the game within reach. His experience as Architect might have been his secret to pull off such poise under pressure, showing no signs of panic throughout the game.

Michael Guiao led Snowbird with 20 points, teamed up with Pastor Victor Ramoy and Rendell Ching who combined for 20 to keep the game close at half time. Bernabe picked up from thereon, scoring 19 all in the second half.

Dayle Ng quietly scored 16 points ang grabbed 11 rebounds.

Jonathan Yu paced Wishcraft with 18 points, while Mandy Yao and Andy Tan backed him up with 12 and 11 points respectively.

No. 6 seed Snowbird is a win away from the championship game, will face No. 2 seed Kopinando on Sunday, 2pm at Philippine Buddhacare Academy Gym.

Winner between Snowbird and Kopinando will advance to the finals. Championship game is on March 13, 8:30pm at Philippine Buddhacare Academy Gym.

Uhr-Kraft Watch team swept its first 10 games and got an automatic finals slot.

Snowbird vs. Wishcraft http://gabl.ph/2009/03/04/snowbird-vs-wishcraft/ http://gabl.ph/2009/03/04/snowbird-vs-wishcraft/#comments Thu, 05 Mar 2009 02:48:58 +0000 gracesports http://gabl.ph/?p=432 Snowbird Sando Bags and Wishcraft arranged a Friday night showdown by knocking out their respective opponents in Tuesday night’s Grace Alumni Basketball League (GABL) wildcard action at Pace Academy in Quezon City.

No. 6 seed Snowbird, who seems to enjoy being tagged as underdogs, started the night by showing their mastery over No. 3 seed Kanzai Auto Supply 89-79.

As the lowest seeded team in the wildcard round, Snowbird of playing Coach Jason Ang played without pressure and took the game slowly but surely despite trailing by 6 after the 1st, 13 at half and 10 before the start of the 4th quarter.

The short handed Coach Ang, an Architect by profession and part owner of AngLo Partners and Architects (AngLo), practically used a 6-man rotation the whole game as the 7th man fielded in saw limited minutes.

Snowbird, made mostly of Grace Christian Church members and has a 4-1 win-loss record on Sunday games, showed that they can also win on non Sunday games.

Bryan Bernabe’s 24 points led the way for Snowbird while Chino Guasa and Michael Guiao combined for 36 points, but it was Dayle Ng, a consistent member of the Defensive team, that made a big difference for Snowbird. Ng had a brilliant all around game of 16 points, 9 rebounds, 5 blocks and 3 steals.

It was the second time that Snowbird came from behind to snatch a win from Kanzai. On their Feb 22 quarterfinals meeting, they trailed 46-26 at the start of 4th quarter, but managed to outscore their opponent 27-5 in the pay off period to pull off a 53-51 win. This time, the sando bag makers outscored the car specialist 32-12 in the last quarter to march to their first final 4 appearance.

Glendon Co paced Kanzai with 20 points while the See brothers Jet and Tristan combined for 24 points.

In the second game, defending Champion Wishcraft leaned on their little big man Jonathan Yu and prodigal son Jerome Siongloo to repulse Gerry’s Grill 91-81 and kept their chance of defending their title alive.

Wishcraft struggled in their first 6 games with a 2-4 win-loss record but struck up 5 straight wins to arrange a Friday night showdown with Snowbird.

Yu led Wishcraft with a game-high 24 points, 12 of them coming from the charity stripe and Siongloo had 15 points, making 4 of 7 from the three point area.

The usually reliable Andy Nelson Tan was visibly bothered by the presence of the bigger Daryl Tan, struggled on the floor making only 1 point in the 1st three quarters. But exploded when it matters most, scoring 7 of their team’s last 15 points to end up with a 8 point, 14 rebound production.

Gilbert Go and Ace Balagtas paced the Grillers with 18 and 17 points respectively.

Gerry’s Grill team owner Christian Cheng actually started the game on fire making 4 straight shot from the rainbow area and also added 3 charity points in the 2nd quarter to finish the half with 15 points, but was not fielded in that much in the 2nd half.

Uhr-Kraft Sweeps! Goes to the Finals; Wishcraft Jumps to No. 4 http://gabl.ph/2009/03/01/uhr-kraft-sweeps-goes-to-the-finals-wishcraft-jumps-to-no-4/ http://gabl.ph/2009/03/01/uhr-kraft-sweeps-goes-to-the-finals-wishcraft-jumps-to-no-4/#comments Mon, 02 Mar 2009 02:51:11 +0000 gracesports http://gabl.ph/?p=398 Uhr-Kraft Watch survived repeated rallies in the end game and finished the game with a 70-64 win over Gerry’s Grill in this afternoon’s Grace Alumni Basketball League (GABL) action at Philippine Buddhacare Academy in Quezon City.

Uhr-Kraft, which finished the quarterfinals round with an immaculate record giving them an automatic slot in the winner take all finals, was led by the ageless workhorse Jerry Ong with 15 points. Edwin Yap and Emmanuel Chua also finished the game in double digits, with 11 and 10 points respectively.

Kenson Ng had a game-high 16 points, making 4 out of 4 shots from the three point area, to pace Gerry’s Grill

Wishcraft edged Kanzai 68 to 65 in a highly emotional game to finish the quarterfinals with a 6-4 win-loss record. Wishcraft swept their three quarterfinals assignment, after finishing the elimination round with a 3-4 win-loss record, to jump to No. 4 seed.

Wishcraft was led by the ahya and shoti tandem of Andy and Alex Tan. Alex led Wishcraft with 17 points while Andy had his usual double-double numbers of 15 points and 10 rebounds.

Kanzai led 41-28 at the half and 55-43 at the end of three quarters, but managed to score only 10 points in the pay-off quarter. It was their 2nd loss in three quarterfinals outing. The other loss was a two point heartbreaking loss to Snowbird, were Kanzai only scored 5 points to Snowbirds’ 26 in the fourth quarter.

Stephen Chua had a game-high 20 points to pace Kanzai but did not get enough help from other teammates as he was the only player to score in double digits for Kanzai.

A win by Gerry’s Grill would have given the no. 2 seed Kopinando a twice to beat advantage in the semifinals round.

In the other games, Kopinando eliminated Mega Allied Canvass Corp 75-65 and Snowbird needed 5 extra minute to defeat the already eliminated Alex Shoes.

A step ladder knock out format will now be followed for the other finals slot starting on Tuesday were No. 3 Kanzai will face No. 6 Snowbird while No. 4 Wishcraft will face No. 5 Gerry’s Grill. The winners of both game will face each other on Friday for the right to play No. 2 Kopinando in the semis. The survivor in the semis will then move on to the finals against the waiting Uhr-Kraft.

Snowbird was led by Bryan Bernabe’s game-high 18 points but it was Dayle Ng’s big basket of a Rendel Ching assist that broke the 51 point deadlock with less than 3 seconds left in regulation. Jet See actually had a chance to win it for Kanzai but his desperation attempt from the three point area did not go in. Glendon Co paced Kanzai, who suffered their second loss in 8 games, with 10 points.
