Keith Jasper Agovida of Jose Rizal University lit up the scoreboard with 82 points last Sepptember 5, 2008, a new NCAA junior basketball tournament individual record, as he scored on nearly every possession in the Light Bombers’ 127-49 rout of Malayan High School of Science at the Astrodome.
Agovida’s output did not include a single triple, making his accomplishment even more astonishing. He did attempt a trey once but missed, otherwise it could have been 85. Already the tournament’s top scorer with an average of 30.9 points per game, Agovida was like a person possessed as he went to the basket time and again and scoring almost at will.
The 6-foot-2, Agovida was 36-of-50 from the field and 10-of-16 from the free throw area. His other highlights — 17 rebounds, five steals and two blocks — enough to cushion six turnovers in 37 minutes of action.
In July 25 this year, Agovida, last year’s Rookie of the Year winner scored 59 points against the same squad.
Likewise, the 6-foot-2 Agovida ripped the old mark of 71 set by Erwin Bolabola of Letran in the 70s.
Also shining for the Light Bombers was Ric Madlangbayan who produced triple-double with 15 points, 10 rebounds, and 11 assists. He also had five steals and a blocked shot.
Louie Vigil also completed a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds. He added eight assists, two steals, and two blocks.
Actually, two other JRU players scored in double figures as they improved their record to 7-4, enough to earn a semis berth
